This module introduces trainees to the principles and practices of Solutions Journalism, with a focus on climate change adaptation and mitigation. It explores how journalistic approaches can be employed to report on climate change in ways that are not only informative but also constructive, by highlighting successful adaptation and mitigation responses, innovations, and strategies to tackle climate change related challenges. By using solutions journalism, trainees will learn to move beyond the typical narrative of doom and gloom, showcasing practical, real-world solutions that address both the causes, impacts and symptoms of climate change.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this module learners should be able to:

(i)     

      I.  Explain the concept of Solutions Journalism, climate change adaptation, and mitigation.  

      II.  Explain the relevance of Solutions Journalism to climate change reporting.

     III.  Analyze how media can shape public perception of climate change and influence policy decisions.

    IV. Describe various strategies and initiatives in climate change adaptation e.g. building resilience, community-based adaptation, nature-based solutions for adaptation, ecosystem-based adaptation, and intervention across sectors.

      V. Describe various strategies and initiatives in climate change mitigation e.g., emissions/carbon reduction, renewable energy, carbon sequestration, and mitigation across sectors (energy, transport, forestry, agriculture, waste management, etc).

    VI. Critically assess the impact of reporting on climate solutions in fostering hope, inspiring action, and empowering local communities.

VII.     Gain skills in producing high-quality, solutions-oriented journalism on climate change.
